Data Citation and Attribution

Project Description

The Data Citation and Attribution Working Group's objective is to recommend best practices to support data attribution and citation through the use of standardized metadata properties. The goal is to improve data Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability (FAIR data principles: and collaboration in the use of monitoring natural resources data.

Initially, we are striving to support better data attribution for the Coordinated Assessments for Salmon and Steelhead database (CA) managed by StreamNet, and NOAA Fisheries Salmon Population Summary database as case studies and develop general best practices recommendations for data repositories across the region. We have a data exchange for Salmonid populations that is functioning. We want to improve our documentation of the data with metadata for future re-use of the data, provenance, credit for those who acquired the data, and to improve confidence and trust in existing data.

This work support publishing of data with standardized citations, but not USGS data; Federal research agency regulations do not apply. PNAMP, affiliated with USGS, is coordinating and facilitating the process among many entities, including tribes and tribal coalitions, state agencies, and other governmental and non-governmental partnership organizations.

Presented Workgroup Progress at CA Meeting

June 5, 2017 - 1:46pm

At the Coordinated Assessments Workshop Meeting, May 11, 2017, Sheryn presented a brief synopsis of Data Attribution and Citation, PNAMP's role and scope of the task for Data Attribution, and the Data Attribution Working Group's progress to date. Some 13 attendees at the CA Workshop are also members of the Data Attribution Working Group. Presentation is here:

Chris Wheaton and Jen Bayer moderated a whole group discussion. The group agreed that the Coordinated Assessments Data Exchange (CAX) project would include fields for data contributors' organizations as an attribute when data is uploaded to CAX. The fields would need validation rules to ensure they are completed, and could subsequently be cited with data sets.
