Call for Symposia

For more information, please check the conference website:

The Society for Ecological Restoration Northwest Chapter, the Society of Wetland Scientists Pacific Northwest Chapter invite symposia and organized workshop proposals for the 2018 joint regional conference, Restoring Resilient Communities in Changing Landscapes, to be held October 15-19, 2018 at the Davenport Grand Hotel in Spokane, Washington. The conference highlights the intersection between the practice and science of ecological restoration and ecosystem management in the Cascadia Bioregion, along with a broader continental perspective through participation of the North American Chapters of SER. We invite proposals for symposia and workshops that are of interest to a regional and wider continental audience of practitioners and scientists of ecological restoration and ecosystem management.

The conference is planned to include the following thematic topics:

-Wetland ecology and management
-Ecological resilience
-Community engagement
-Global change and restoration planning
-Restoration for migratory species
-Connecting and restoring conservation corridors
-Tribal perspectives of restoration and ecosystem management
-Aquatic restoration and management
-Wetland restoration, mitigation, and planning
-Sage-steppe ecosystems

Proposals that address conference themes are especially welcome, although they encourage symposia on other restoration and aquatic-focused topics relevant to the Pacific Northwest Region. They also encourage submission of proposals that include scientific research or restoration case studies, as well as presentations that emphasize social, cultural, and economic aspects of ecological restoration and management.

The conference will include three days of plenary and concurrent sessions. Workshops and field trips will be scheduled before and after the technical sessions. Symposia are encouraged to fit within one to three hours and should allow for synthesis and discussion. If multiple symposia of the same topic are received, they may encourage organizers to combine their symposia.

Please submit proposals via this web form before February 16th, 2018.

All proposals should include:

Title of symposium

Principal organizer (name, affiliation, contact information including e-mail)

Co-organizers and moderator (name, affiliation, e-mail)

Speakers (name, affiliation, e-mail, and tentative titles or topic areas). Indicate which speakers are confirmed vs. tentative.

Next Steps
Submitters will be notified of symposium acceptance by March 31, 2018.

If a proposal is accepted, the organizer will be asked to submit a final summary description and proposed speaker list for the symposium to the Program Committee by May 31, 2018 and abstracts for all symposium speakers by June 31, 2018.

Organizers will be informed of their session’s time and date in August 2018. The Program Committee will attempt to avoid conflicts between sessions and will give organizers an opportunity to notify the committee of known scheduling conflicts. If organizers are arranging multiple, related symposia and do not want them to overlap, then they should note this in the proposed structure section of their proposal. While the committee will try to accommodate scheduling conflicts, the committee may not be able to honor all scheduling requests.
