Solicitation for Priority Columbia River Basin Toxic Reduction Actions Solicitation for Priority Columbia River Basin Toxic Reduction Actions

The Columbia River Toxics Reduction Working Group is posting a solicitation for suggestions for specific priority toxics reduction actions based on the 2010 Columbia River Toxics Reduction Action Plan by March 8, 2012.

http://www.epa.gov/region10/pdf/columbia/toxics-action-plan_sept2010.pdf.

On August 24, 2011, leaders from tribal, state, federal and non-governmental organizations throughout the Columbia River Basin came together in Spokane, WA. They agreed to collaborate on efforts to reduce toxics in the Columbia River, formalize the Columbia River Toxics Reduction Working Group, and to meet again in the Fall of 2012. To prepare for that Fall meeting, the Columbia River Toxics Reduction Working Group will host a Strategic Planning Session on June in Portland, Oregon.

To assist in this planning session, we are requesting priority toxic reduction actions focusing on three initiatives from the 2010 Columbia River Toxics Reduction Action Plan.

1) Increase Toxics Reduction Projects;

2) Conduct Monitoring, Quantify Threats, and Prioritize Actions; and

3) Increase Political Commitment to Programs and Funding.

*****WE NEED YOUR INPUT AND PARTICIPATION****************************************

We are soliciting suggestions for specific actions or projects that can build upon the 2010 Action Plan and could be supported by the Executive members of the Working Group at their Fall meeting. Your action ideas
should be collaborative, innovative, could be demonstration projects that have broad geographic scope, could build upon existing or planned projects, would address chemicals of concern in the Basin, should fall
within the objectives of funding available to the participating organizations or could already be funded but in need of collaborative support.

Please submit ideas:
Initiative #1 on Toxics Reduction to Kevin Scribner at kevin@salmonsafe.org
Initiative #2 on Monitoring to Mike Cox at cox.michael@epa.gov
Initiative #3 on Political Commitment to Catherine Corbett at Ccorbett@lcrep.org

For each project/idea please provide title, short description including purpose, primary outcome(s), and estimated costs. Please provide by Thursday March 8th.

We will conduct an initial review of the ideas at the April 2012 Working Group Meeting in Walla Walla, Washington on April 10th. All are invited to attend the group meeting, review submitted actions and provide
feedback in advance of the Strategic Planning Session.
