Stream temperatures impact fish and wildlife habitat, and are easily affected by human activity. Environmental laws compel utility companies, whose clean but warm wastewater often increases stream temperatures, to spend significant amounts of money addressing their ecological impact.
Government regulation can protect the environment from harm, but it doesn't always provide the most effective or economically efficient ways to do so. The Willamette Partnership and The Freshwater Trust are developing new ways to protect nature by creating markets where businesses can trade the expense of meeting government regulations for investments in the restoration of watersheds and water quality.
On June 24, Bobby Cochran, executive director of the Willamette Partnership, and Joe Whitworth, president of The Freshwater Trust, will challenge us to change how we invest in nature to get the economic and environmental results we want and need.
