TESTIMONY ON THE NATIONAL FISH HABITAT CONSERVATION ACT (S.1214) HEARD BY THE U.S SENATE COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT AND PUBLIC WORKS.


Representatives of the conservation community testified December 3rd, on the National Fish Habitat Conservation Act (S. 1214) in front of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works' Subcommittee on Water and Wildlife.  Dan Ashe (Deputy Director - US Fish and Wildlife Service), Eric Schwaab (Deputy Secretary - Maryland Department of Natural Resources/on behalf of AFWA), Robert Bendick (Director, US Government Relations - The Nature Conservancy) and Gordon Roberston (Vice President - American Sportfishing Association) all testified on behalf of (S.1214).

Testimony was heard on a total of nine Fish and Wildlife related bills, including:


S. 373, A bill to amend title 18, United States Code, to include constrictor snakes
S. 1519, Nutria Eradication and Control Act of 2009
S. 1421, Asian Carp Prevention and Control Act
S. 1965, Feral Swine Eradication and Control Pilot Program Act of 2009
H.R. 2188, Joint Ventures in Bird Habitat Conservation Act of 2009          
S. 1214, National Fish Habitat Conservation Act  
H.R. 3537, Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program Reauthorization Act of 2009
H.R. 3433, To amend the North American Wetlands Conservation Act.
H.R. 509, Marine Turtle Conservation Reauthorization Act of 2009.  


 


 



 


NATIONAL FISH HABITAT CONSERVATION ACT (H.R. 2565) GAINS FIRST REPUBLICAN CO-SPONSOR IN HOUSE.  

The National Fish Habitat Conservation Act gained another key House co-sponsor in December 2009.  Representative Bill Cassidy (R-LA) signed on in support of H.R. 2565 on December 2nd.  Representative Cassidy's support is significant, as he is the first Republican co-sponsor of the legislation.    


Over the past few months, H.R. 2565 has gained additional co-sponsors. Representatives Norm Dicks (D-WA) and David Price (D-NC) signed on in October, along with John Murtha (D-PA) and Donna Christensen (D-VI) and Mike Thompson (D-CA).  H.R. 2565, originally introduced by Representative Ron Kind (D-WI) in May.  

Support for the Senate bill (S.1214) stands at 12 co-sponsors.  S. 1214 was originally introduced by Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) in June, 2009.  Below is a listing of co-sponsors and when they signed on in support of the legislation:
