Call for volunteers! Freshwater mussel salvage on Middle Fork Forrest Conservation Area

Calling all volunteers for a mussel salvage effort. Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon are looking for volunteers to assist with freshwater mussel salvage and relocation on the Middle Fork John Day the week of June 19th, 2017. If you/your crew are interested in participating, read on!

The salvage is motivated by a restoration project happening on the Middle Fork Forrest Conservation Area. They are removing a number of rock barbs and riprap on a section of channel and placing some new engineered log jams. While they're not dewatering, there will be disturbance from heavy equipment, hence the need for a salvage. The water has been too high for Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon to do much recon, so they're not sure how many mussels there may be, but based on how many they salvaged from 1k of channel in a similar area last year (3000+), there may be quite a few.

No mussel experience is required, they need hands to assist with finding and removing mussels, hands to assist with loading them into coolers and tallying, someone to move the coolers to the new location on the property (or nearby), and hands to assist with positioning them in the substrate in their new habitat.

Wanna take a break from salmonids and work with some super cool and ecologically important freshwater inverts? Let Emily know if you/your crew are interested and available to help with the salvage and if so what day(s) you can assist. Any amount you can be there is helpful. Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon will provide all salvage related equipment (coolers, etc. to transport mussels), but volunteers will need to provide their own wading or (preferably) snorkeling gear. Everyone will need at minimum some kind of wading gear. If you have a wetsuit/drysuit and snorkel, that is even more useful.
